Recreation nearby
Six Lakes Plain
A few kilometres
away from the centre of Duisburg, in the immediate vicinity of the
Wedau sports facility lies the largest recreational area in Greater
Duisburg. The six lakes in the woodland with paths along their banks,
boats for hire and a harbour for model boats make this area, for
water sports or simply for leisure, a favourite spot both for sportsmen
and tourists. In summer the open-air swimming pool invites the visitor
to swim or to bathe. There are six water-sports clubs which have
their permanent quarters on the bank of the Masurensee. From the
Wolfsberg, the highest point in Duisburg, 65 metres above sea-level,
there is a wide view from the observation
tower. The history of the lakes reaches back to 1912. The extraction
of gravel in the area led to the quarries filling up with ground
water, and these were later named Wambachsee and Masurensee. In
1962 the city acquired the area and began a military-type operation
to develop it into a leisure centre. In the following years more
lakes, partly connected with each other, were excavated: the Wolfssee,
the Wildförstersee and lastly the Haubachsee. Parts of the
water areas and of the banks of some of the lakes are scheduled
as nature reserves and are not open to the public.
